What does a Chemical Engineer do?


A professional chemical engineer designs and implements techniques for producing, converting, and handling various materials used in the manufacturing of chemical products. In the past, the primary role of these engineers was to design the synthesis and development of chemical compounds.

Chemical engineers may also work in the supply chain management of the chemical industry, implementing processes to increase the availability of materials and products.


Another prominent area where many chemical engineers work is the military. Chemical pilots, rocket scientists, and aircraft pilots all need to know the latest technologies and skills in order to perform their job duties safely and efficiently.


Chemical engineers are needed in the development of military weaponry, including ballistic missiles, aircraft, boats and defense systems. Because of their skills and knowledge in chemical engineering, they are also needed in the production of high-tech combat boots, uniforms and other clothing for the military.


Although this line of work requires a wide range of skills, the primary responsibilities of chemical engineers are those related to production and the handling of chemical engineering products.


Chemical product engineering involves the design, synthesis and delivery of high quality products using controlled, safe process methods. These processes must be closely monitored and directed by a qualified senior engineer.


Chemical product engineers typically prepare samples of raw materials required for the manufacture of the final product and perform quality control checks on finished products.


Chemical engineers are also responsible for managing and operating plant machinery. They oversee the transport, handling, storage and use of raw materials and are responsible for the disposal of finished products.


In addition to performing these necessary tasks in the manufacture of controlled products, chemical engineers are also involved in the development of new products or test of existing products to ensure they meet specifications.


The ability to change or adjust any aspect of the manufacturing process to make the process better, faster, cheaper or safer is the goal of a chemical engineer. From developing new materials and equipment to testing them to ensure they work and from producing safety standards to communicating information about hazards and procedures to workers, chemical engineers play a crucial role in protecting the operations of many companies.
